At Heart of the Glen we are naturally situated within the UNESCO Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere and Galloway Dark Sky Park which make it the perfect place to star gaze and take in the wonders of nature.

What is the UNESCO Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere?

The Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere covers more than 9,700km² of southwest Scotland and is recognised internationally as a world class environment for people and nature. As such it is also a world class visitor destination, the largest UNESCO Biosphere in the whole of the UK and part of Scotland’s award-winning UNESCO Trail. The UNESCO ethos is all about protecting and celebrating natural and cultural heritage and making these accessible to people in a meaningful way.
What does this mean for us as a business at Heart of the Glen?

The UNESCO Biosphere is a place for adventure, discovery and inspiration. As Proud Supporters, the Heart of the Glen are delighted to share places to go and things to see, everything that will help our guests get closer to nature and what makes this region so special. We encourage support for the Biosphere’s Visitor Charter, which invites you to ‘love local, be local’ for however long you are here.
The Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Partnership works across this UNESCO region delivering projects in conservation, education, sustainable development and climate resilience. If you are coming to stay at Heart of the Glen and want to find out more about what the Biosphere is and does, visit their website at www.gsabiosphere.org.uk. We especially recommend the ‘Explore’ page which profiles local activity providers, trained Biosphere Guides, ideas for Low Carbon Days Out, and a host of walking and cycling itineraries.
